First laugh: Calling rec league games for 13/14 year olds. I have a 5 second closely guarded violation against Team A in front of Team A coach. He looks dumbfounded at the call. In transition, I look back to see and hear my partner explaining to the coach what a 5 second violation call means, to which the coach responded, “But the defender was three feet away.”

Second laugh: Next time down the court we have a one-and-one at the line. As the first attempt by Team A goes up I have a clear lane violation by A1. I blow the play dead and give the ball to Team B at which time I hear Team A coach bellow, can we play basketball and stop calling these “hokey pokey” calls.

Coaches. I think I could count on one hand the number of coaches who even have a modest understanding of any of the rules of basketball.

You know, it might break some of the tension if we did the hokey-pokey after each call...

I'd never really do it of course, but the temptation to say something like "As soon as you quit making hokey-pokey violations and start playing basketball we will..." is almost too good to pass up. Doesn't keep me from thinking it though.....
