During my son's game today, a foul was called on the opposing team right before half. Before putting the ball in play, the scorekeeper informed the officials it was the 7th (actually 8th) team foul. Neither official could recall the player fouled, so they gave us the ball at the point of infraction. I was not thrilled ( I coach as well as officiate), but was not sure of the proper procedure, so I was left to ask only that they ask the scorekeeper to determine if he knew the player fouled (which they didn't do). Under the circumstances, did they do the right thing? My gut feeling is they didn't - at a minimum, they should have made a better effort to determine who was fouled. In fact, when asked the referree actually looked at me like I was crazy expecting him to know who the shooter should be in the confusion. Isn't that his job??

FYI - I was never accusatory - I simply asked him to try to ID the shooter. there was only 2 seconds left in the half and my best shooter would have been at the line, so it obviously pernalized us.

thanks

If it's 1&1, somebody's got to shoot. Deciding to award the ball OOB just because you don't know who the shooter is, is stupidity at it's worst.

How should they have determined who shoots the free throws?

Ask:
Ask your Partner
Ask the scorekeeper
Ask the timer
ask the player that committed foul - who were you gaurding
ask offense "which one of you was driving around # 34?

But not in Christian schools!! I don't know about other Christian schools, but at Quaker schools, we'd assemble a clearness committee consisting of both coaches, one ref, two players from each team and an elder from each school. We'd hold a short period of silence, and listen for the Holy Spirit to move us to consensus. As we listened, one or two might share with the whole group a leading from the spirit.

Then if that didn't work, we'd draw straws.

In my church, we'd have a congregational vote to establish a committee chairman (man or woman) who would then establish a committee. They would meet to determine the offended party, probably hold some interviews over pie and ice cream, and proceed to inform the pastor of their decision; at which point we would call a congregational meeting to vote on their recommendation.

All followed by a potluck dinner, of course.
