Did anyone see this game? It was a very hard fought game...and IMO, difficult to officiate. Higgins, Burr, & Hillary were on the game. I thought they did an excellent job of managing the game...even if I could pick out some nit-picky stuff.

Question: In the second half, they called a T on Memphis player Njoya for elbowing Marquette player Dieter after Dieter made a 3-pointer and HAD ALREADY RETURNED TO THE FLOOR. I am assuming they called a T during the dead ball period that would have occurred after the time the ball had gone through the hoop and before the Memphis player had retrieved it to inbound it. Dieter went to the line and shot the T...and then I assume they went AP...and Marquette got the ball back @ POI.

This is what happened, right?

Sounds to me like they called an intentional foul if Marquette got the ball back. I didn't see the game but from your recount of the game it sounds like an intentional. If it was a T I would think they should have shot the 2 shots and then resume from the POI, which sounds like Memphis ball on the end line with the ability to run it.

Noticed that you are from Plainfield, IN. Which officials association do you belong to? I am new in the IOA this year and have done a few games out in Plainfield. I live in Northwest corner of Indianapolis.

Jerry, during a T situation where there is NO team possession which I am assuming how it all happened in this particular situation, you go AP...so I am assuming they went to AP which was pointing in the direction of Marquette. So, Marquette ball @ POI. I am waiting for Chuck, Dan, Tony, or someone who saw the game and can confirm!

I am in the IOA and have been for 7 years. I have been to my share of the meetings this year and probably won't be attending any more. I am on the IOA website...so you can look up my info if you want to contact me!

Since the ball had already gone through the hoop, the ball was dead. Dead ball contact is an intentional T which gives the offended team 2 shots and the ball at midcourt.

Ok, I see why they took the ball out at midcourt. The place at which Njoya committed the T wouldn't exactly be POI. Since it happened during that brief dead ball period, POI really doesn't exist here.

Indy_ref - I have only done a couple of D-III JV games as a favor for another ref's friend who is a D-III coach in Missouri so I am not familiar with all of the details of NCAA rules. I was kind of right though, it did end up being intentional of sorts.

What is your name? If you don't want to put it on here email me at [email protected]

i thought an intentional foul, was two shots and ball at closest spot of the foul??? is it because the ball was dead that it is different???

Chuck is completely correct. The intentional T is the difference.

it was a contact T

I was watching this game on TV

Let me acknowledge I only work NFHS.... but enjoy watching NCAA.

As brief as the camera "stayed with the shooter" (Diener) after the shot release, I clearly saw the elbow being thrown (live, in "real life speed"). I wondered why there wasn't an immediate whistle, for the elbow.

The announcers acted shocked (no suprise there) when the officials assessed the T foul after reviewing the tape. I am not sure why the referee went to the monitor initially. The game was delayed as Deiner was recieving medical attention for the elbow .

There hadn't been a whistle blown for the T, initially. I just found it a bit awkward.

Are you sure the T was for the elbow, and that it was assessed only after looking at the monitor?

If they gave a T based on the replay, that's a HUGE screw-up for this crew (the last few NCAA officiating bulletins have been emphasizing this non-stop).

That said, they are allowed to look to see what the clock should be set to. I can only hope this is what happened.
