Top 5 is a relative question. You have to consider that any of the nine officials you see on any given Monday night on ESPN would have to be considered. Or the six who are on TV on Tuesday. The assignors always send their best to games making National TV.

Well if that is the case then here is my list.

Ed Hightower
Ted Higgins
Ted Hiliary
Tom O'Neal
Jim Burr
Donny Gray
Teddy Valentine

I see these guys all the time on the Nationally Televised games.

Peace

Blindzebra74, can you tell us what you mean by best? I'm not trying to be funny but when talking about who is on TV all the time versus who is a great official someone I've seen posted sticks out like a sore thumb. Here is my list based on what I consider great officiating between the lines.

Scott Thornley - very passionate about the game
Dave Libbey - expert on the 3-man mechanics, will call anything anytime
Ted Valentine - will call anything anytime
Donnee Gray - rock solid
Cofer/Luckie/Rose/Hess/Clinton/Jones - I'm biased but these guys are all about getting it right and doing the best job possible

cmathews Thu Jan 06, 2005 09:25am

it is regional as well

You know this discussion could go on for ever. Part of the discussion will center around regional bias, if you see guys work a lot, unless they screw up pretty badly they will be in your top 5. BITS and I watch Mountain West ball because that is where we are from, as well as other conferences. We both mention Dave Hall and Randy McCall, neither of these guys has made anyone elses top 5 and they have both worked national championship games in the last 5 years. McCall worked the big game last year, if you get that game I would think you could be considered for most anyone's top 5.

I think asking about and doing what I would call campaigning for specific officials is a touchy subject to say the least. Allowing members to post their choices and leaving it at that would be the best thing to do IMHO.

One name not mentioned that should be is Gerold Boudreaux. Has called several National Championships in the last 5 years.

rainmaker Thu Jan 06, 2005 11:37am

Nan Fisk, until she retired.

Also, a local guy who's moving up fast, Tom Spitznagel.

And our own, rockyroad, who's done some national stuff at the small college level.

My all-time favorite college ref was Don Rutledge. Always fun to watch in person and always gracious when we'd say hi to him when I was a student in Tennessee.
