I am the trail in a 3 man crew of a Varsity Girl's game last night. White team has the ball in their frontcourt, running their half court offense. White1 attempts a pass to White2 near midcourt. The ball is deflected by Blue1, and then deflects off of White2, and goes into the backcourt. White2 then goes to the backcourt and picks it up. I call a backcourt violation because: Team Control- White, Last to touch it in the frontcourt- White, First to touch it in the backcourt- White. = Backcourt Violation.
I was calling with 2 "veteran" officials of 20+ years. The lead official comes from the endline, and tells me "ball was tipped by blue". I told him that I saw that, but that it was then tipped by white before going to the backcourt. He said that because blue tipped it before it was tipped by white, that it wasn't backcourt. The referee came over and agreed with him. Thinking that maybe I was missing something, I let them "punk" me into changing my call and giving the ball to white. Before the boy's varsity game, we talked about the play in detail. Both said they were positive it was not backcourt. Help Please!

they were both wrong

Unless the blue team controlled the ball thus ending team control for white, they were wrong it was a BC violation..

He did? He let them "punk" him...;)

Really he did though...you don't want to get into a big argument with two 20+ year veterans over this while the game is going. It is best to show them the case book play later...they will hopefully appreciate your professionalism.

Agree. Usually the best way to handle it from a political standpoint.

Carolina Ref,

You had it right. It's called good defense on the part of Blue... White loses.

Next time you'll know. "Gentlemen, you are wrong. It is a back court violation because White touched it last. I'll prove it to you after the game. Now what do you want me to do? Suck it up and look the part of the dummy in front of both coaches and all of the crowd? Or do you want to back off, shake your head in agreement, and let me make my own calls."

OR

"If I change my call (politically correct now that you've both felt the need to approach and have me change the call) and then later, I show you that I was correct, I want both of you to contact both coaches and tell them that you were wrong and I was right. Good deal? Infact, I want you do do that anyway. My call is correct."

Yeah, like that will go over good. ;)
