Talked with a friend of mine who is a Freshman coach. Had a game the other day and the officials did something that was completely unbelieveable. Cannot believe they handled it this way. HOST team nails what appears to be a game tying three at the buzzer. Officials go and check the official book and find that my friends team is up by one point according to the book. They tell my friend that "it is a correctable error" and that they will play the over time, however my friends team will start the over time up by one point.

What did they consider to be correctable? Did they determin that the score in the official book was wrong? If the official book has them up by 1, what did they "correct" and how?????

Wrong application of the rule.

The score can be corrected at any time, but if the OT has began, jump has left R's hand, you play the OT.

If they fixed the score BEFORE the ball became live in the OT, no OT is needed. 5-7-4

I don't know the specifics, but try reading case play 5.7.1 and 5.7.4.

thumpferee,
You probably meant 5-7-1 and 5-7-4.
I, and w_sohl, would merely use 5-7-2. ;)

And you would merely be correct. Are the - different from the . which is shown in the book or am I missing something?

What does the case book say? Don't have mine with me.

In a nutshell:
5.7.1 --> While in overtime, before 2nd DB, erroneous free throws may be cancelled.

5.7.4 -->While in overtime, given knowledge, the ref adds a missing point. [Without knowledge the ref does not add a point.]

In this case the officials knew before the OT started. It was my understanding that the official book was just that, official. Before the overtime started the officials noted that team "B" was ahead by one single point. I would think this would end the game right there as the scoreboard is only for reference and really means nothing. Wouldn't you end the game stating that the official book has Team "B" ahead by one point therefore there can be no OT? The official book was being handled by Team "A" so it wasn't like Team "B" was tweeking the book.

This goes to game management. Its a lesson we all should learn. The mistake should have been found out at quarter or in the last minutes. We should ask if the scores are right, and how many time outs, etc...

Sounds like no bonus basketball to me. I would say that these were young officials. Although it doesn't look or sound good if you know the rule(s), I'd be willing to bet that they know now and it will never happen again! Live and learn! :)

This is the reason, within the last few minutes of a contest, (timeouts, foul reporting, etc. etc) during a dead ball situation, I like to inquire of the scorekeeper and official bookeeper if everything is in agreeance with the book and scoreboard. If correction is needed, do it then and will not have problem at end of game. Correctable Error?

Who cares what the scoreboard says. The official book is what you go with.

The scoreboard is for the fans.

That is what I told my friend. I told him game would have been over if I had been calling it.
