Just a quick question regarding three person mechanics in high school. I've worked a number of college 3 person games both men's and women but never a high school game. My questions is in the backcourt does the calling official replaces themselves, i.e. no long switch, or is there a switch? Is there any other major differences I need to be aware of? I don't have my books handy so thought I'd ask.

Here is a good reference tool that summarizes rule difference between NCAA vs NFHS:

Good question about the long switch. No books with me at this time but I make it a point to discuss the long switch in pre-game with my crew so that we avoid looking like mice on a treadmill.

In high school 3 man mechanics you are suppose to be doing a long switch mechanic as you were referring too to get the calling official table side.

However, this varies from crew to crew you work with, so you want to make sure to discuss it in pre-game before you take the floor for your assignment.

Supposed to long switch?

I agree with the mechanics of calling official going tableside but this can be accomplished with the avoidance of the long switch scenario. The end result is still the same in that the calling official (L) becomes the the new (T) only that the other two stripes don't have to carousel so much.

We discuss this in pre-game, normally we bump and slide which means the calling official (Trail), if he has a foul in the back court, makes the call and keeps the ball.

We talked a little yesterday about this subject. Check out my post and my replies about 3/4 way down the first page entitled "Three Man Rotation". Looks to me it depends on crew and pre-game to decide proper mechanics. From what I can assume, there is no concrete rules on the mechanics. I guess we will find out next year when the Officials Mechanics book is updated!!

crews are doing it differently all over the country.. But we are not supposed to be doing the Long Switch...it's just like the NCAA MECHANICS...there is not one thing that is different in the rotations...
