Hi Everyone-

I know it was a POE this year regarding a defender jabbing towards the shooter's stomach. I'm wondering if you give the defender a warning for that, and then T him up the next time, or do you immediately give him a technical in the first instance of it? I saw one of my students do this in a game but I don't think the officials saw it. Can you tell me what the procedure would be?

Also, regarding the 10 second count -
Team B scores, Team A has the ball OOB going the other way. A1 inbounds to A2 who is in the backcourt. A2, attempting a pass to A3 (also in the backcourt), has his pass deflected by a defender and the ball goes OOB. At this point, 5 seconds have passed. So now Team A has the throw in - that means they only have 5 seconds to get the ball into the frontcourt, correct?

In the 1st situation, if the official sees it, he's gonna call it. No need to warn the player first.

In the second situation, the count will start over with the out of bounds sitation. A will have 10 seconds in the backcourt after the inbounds.

A jab in the stomach will the the defender a nice personal foul and a talk from me. As far as the 10 second count, if the ball goes out of bounds by the defending team, the count starts over. You continue the count if the ball is dislodged from team A until control has been gained by team b.

The 10 second count starts over.

Just to clarify, regarding the jabbing - the defender need not hit the shooter in the stomach, right? But the mere act of jabbing could potentially warrant a T, right?

I am not aware of a jabbing-at-an-opponent's-stomach POE. Putting a hand in front of an opponent's eyes, on the other hand, is a technical foul. (Basically, it's unsafe so don't do it whether or not the opponent has the ball.)

On the jabbing-at-the-stomach behavior, I don't think I have anything until/unless contact is made.
