I'm without a mechanic book presently and would like to know if the mechanic for insuring the possession arrow is set correctly is always the R's responsibility or is it who ever ends up opposite table after play resumes. Is there a good reason for whatever the mechanic is or an explanation for it?

Yes, on the ball is tipped, the R needs to make sure that the arrow goes the opposite team that got the tip. I have been trying to keep the possesions in my head. I had a problem with this Saturday night, the person at the table was new and I was keeping the possesions in my head. My partner was the R and we had a jump ball situation and I pointed on way and the arrow was going the other. So its good to try and sneak a peak whether you are the R or not. But the R make sure that the arrow is set.

I believe the new trail is supposed to ensure the arrow goes the right way. That will usually be the R, but if the ball is tipped deep into back court, then the R will take the lead and the U will have trail. That's two-whistle. Don't know about three.

This is EVERYONE'S responsibility.

That said, assuming no quick turnover, it's going to be in the R's primary.

I also use the spare whistle in my pocket to remind me or a small rubberband that fits my thumb. My brain shuts down too often to try and keep track of it in my head.

What are some other techniques?

I picked this up at camp this summer. Every time you start a count, instead of saying one-thousand-one, one-thousand-two, etc. . . say red-arrow-one, red-arrow-two, etc. . . based on whichever team has the arrow. You still keep a steady count, but you also know on nearly every possession which way the arrow is pointed.

Good idea! I'm trying it in my next game.
