Player A1 receives pass and holds, while closely guarded. I start visible count. I stop my count as A1 dribbles right but restart when he pulls up and comes back left, still closely guarded. On my fifth visible count the kid stops the dribble. The opposing coach is already screaming "that's Five", as I blow the whistle and signal the violation.
Coach A says, "He stopped his dribble and gets a new 5 second count".
It was already 5 seconds so the call was justified but does he get a new count when he picks up his dribble??

I don't understand exactly what you're saying. But I think I know what you're asking.

In a closely guarded situation:
Player gets the ball - count starts
Player starts dribble - initial count ends and new count begins
Player ends dribble and holds ball - dribble count ends and a new count begins.

Yup. If he's holding the ball, he gets 5 seconds to do something. If he starts a dribble, then he gets another 5 seconds. If he then picks up the dribble, he gets yet another 5 seconds to pass, shoot or request a TO.

If closley guarded you can hold for 4 seconds dribble for 4 seconds and hold again for four seconds- thr fifth second is a violtion

so you were correct in calling the violation...they can hold for 4, dribble for 4 not 5, and then hold for 4...you had 5 during the dribble as he picked it up...violation..good call
