When the ball is in flight, the only way it becomes dead immediately is with an airborn shooter committing the foul. I assume the ball was already in flight. However, this brings up a good point that if the ball had not gone through the basket, there must have been two people in the lane prior to the ball getting to the rim. Now we have to determine if the defensive player came in first, thus causing us to ignore the offensive player entering the lane.
