Help me out here, please. In a tourney this AM A33 gets fouled while shooting. It's late in the 4th and A wants to play "prevent" defense to preserve a lead. When they are lining up, A's coach asks if they have to have men occupying lane spaces during the 2 free throws. I had this question once last year, too. It seems some ref's in the area have been making team mates of the shooter stay in spaces since the rule changes on occupation? Did I miss something, or is that wrong? My partner and I both agreed they could drop all four team mates back and leave the shooter by himself. Was I right or wrong? What say you?

Rev,
Yer good.
We only need the bottom lane spaces filled by opponents. :)

Also, in NFHS play the defense may now slide down and occupy those second spaces that the offense has chosen not to fill. They do not have to remain vacant.

This is also true for NCAA men. But not for NCAA women, I think.

NCAAW - maximum of three defenders on the lane. (I think)

No I don't.
I don't work that level.
So, what's the answer? :)

Max 4 defense, 2 offense (plus the shooter); can't move from "assigned spaces"; can vacate all but lowest spots (spots above the block)
