I did a girls varisty game tonight. With 10 secs left in the 3rd Qtr A1 fouls B1. We give the ball to B for a throw-in. Team B is working the ball in the frontcourt and the horn sounds with the ball live and 4 secs on the clock. The scorer yells out that it should have been a 1 and 1. When the horn sounded all the players froze on the court. Since everything was at a stop we blew the whistle making the ball dead. This is what we did. We put B1 on the line for the free throws (1 and 1). We lined the players up on lane since Team B did not lose possession and continued play from the free throw. We left 4 secs on the clock for the end of the qtr. We think that was right. Anyone disagree?

What if Team A had stolen the inbounds pass and then the horn sounded. We discussed it after the game and came to the conclusion that in this case we would have cleared the lane, let B1 shoot the free throws, and then continued with Team A's ball at the point of interruption.

Finally, did the clock operator do the right thing? We have clock operators as part of our crew (they are in our association). I think the operator should have waited until the next dead ball and then let us know we made the error as opposed to sounding the horn during a live ball. I would like to know what you think so we can discuss it at our next meeting.

The Scorer had the Timer do the correct thing and you and your partner(s) handled the situation correctly.
