I had an interesting thought today about a possible game situation. Someone may have posted this before, but I haven't seen it and would like the opinions of others on this forum.
NFHS play: The HEAD coach of Team A is disqualified for receiving two direct technical fouls. We know that the remaining bench personnel may not use the coaching box, if that state adoption is being used. However, due to the specific wording of 5-8-3 "...a player's/headcoach's oral or visual request for a time-out,..." I wondered if the bench personnel has also lost the ability to call a time-out with the head coach's departure. My opinion is yes and that a time-out request by this team must now come from a player on the court. |

Nevadaref,
I think you are reading way too much into that rule. Someone is the acting coach after the HC is ejected or not present (for any number of reasons). Unless you can find me a ruling that suggests otherwise, I would allow a coach to call timeouts if the original HC was not available. Peace

Help me with this one: If the head coach is ejected, and there is no other adult (coach, trainer, etc) for that team, do we shut the game down? Does a team have to have a "responsible" adult?

yes if HS game. if it's a rec game, i'd let a parent come over from the stands, providing that parent hasn't been "acting a fool" from the stands.

PS FrankHtown, while this is a good question, I would prefer that you start another thread for it, and stick to the topic I started in mine. Please. ![]() |

MTD,
I really need your rules research for this thread! Can you find out if there were some accompanying comments to the head coach being able request a time-out rule change, which would tell us what happens if he is DQ'd? |
