My son is about to turn 18 and has been playing basketball since the age of 8 at both county and HS levels. Now he wants to become a basketball official/referee. We are having a terrible time locating an appropriate Officials' Manual and knowledge of what exactly he needs to do to get the ball rolling (are there schools?). Any suggestions you could give would be awesome.

The state you're in should have a governing organization for high school athletics. I'd look for their website. They should have an officials section that should tell you how to get started. Usually contacting your state association is the first place to go because they'll have the resources and they get that question hundreds of times a year.

Welcome to the board....there are officials that frequent the board, that are from NC...just give them some time, to get back from their games today, and they will be along with the specific information you need.. And tell your son good luck, he is about to head down a very interesting and rewarding road...

Hi ladydoc, another avenue is to ask the Athletic Director of your son's High School how he/she contracts officials. The AD should be able to tell you if there is a local officials' association. Contact someone in that association and s/he will be able to give you information on joining.
