I was just curious as to how many of you have ever officiated a 4 OT boy's Varsity game? I just had my second one in 2 seasons.

Four overtimes! You must be doing something wrong! :D

Had a triple last year but never a 4.

That's what they always say, a good official won't let it go OT. Kids made some un-believable plays to keep it going!

Must get paid hourly on your regular job, huh?

Brian Watson Sat Feb 03, 2001 10:39am

1 three but never four.

I think I would cry.

Mark Dexter Sat Feb 03, 2001 12:33pm

Four overtimes??

I hate working even 1 OT.

DanIvey Sat Feb 03, 2001 02:01pm

Whoa, wait a minute...some of you officials "hate working overtime" games, "would cry" with 4 OTs? Are you kidding? The excitement, the tension, the electricity in the air...that's what basketball is all about! The closer the game the better! What official likes to referee a boring blow out? Check your pulses my referee brothers. :)

My first game of the season was a 4 OT. My partner was a good friend of mine. The kids were good sports, the band was jamming and the gym was packed. It was the best game I've ever been involved in.

Teams tied at 76 at the end of regulation. They each scored six points in the first three OT. The game ended with a three-pointer at the buzzer. A beauty!

We talked about it for days.

Overtimes are AWESOME!

I have only been involved in ONE OT game... (2 yrs of officiating.)
As long as it was not a "blown call" to get into OT... What a great way to prolong the game. BOTH teams (as well as Coaches, Fans and Officials) should thoroughly enjoy this situation... Too bad only one team gets to put a "W" in their column.

PS. Currently watching PSU V. IND on ESPN PLUS with 57.6 left.
PSS. Waited until it was decided... FOUL with 20.1 left... Joe Crispin sinks both PSU 65 IND 62.... IND Scores a...3? (replay) 3 POINTS

Welllllll... ANOTHER OT game.... Check ESPN for final score...

The jelly legs, the mental fatigue, the players who are fouling because their tired, and the irritable coaches. :) I didn't read where any officials said they "hated" overtime but they can be exhausting.

What's a blowout got to do with overtime? The only comparison I can think of is that I don't care for either. We work doubleheaders, so give me two good games that go down to the wire, and end in regulation.

Whenever the game is close late, I always tell my partner that if we go into overtime, IT'S HIS FAULT!!!

Brian Watson Mon Feb 05, 2001 08:58am

I like tight games, but when you start tacking on 4, 8, 12, 16 extra minutes (4 Ot's is another half!), the kids, much like ourselves start to drain, since they are not used to it. Plus they get to sit and take in fluids we don't. Try as you might to make yourself out to be a tough guy, we need the same things. I also know it is harder for them to not commit stupid "fatigue" fouls, and the yippie dogs, A.K.A. coaches, on the sidelines seem to find a way to become even bigger jerks.

I like close ones, but the fun leaves the longer they go.

I used that line three weeks ago in our 1:15 4th Qtr. git together during a 1 pointer. A little levity lightens the load.
"Watch for this, watch for that, keep an eye on the benches for TO, make the calls solid, no guessing, and if it goes to overtime it your fault."

Had my first one (in 26 years) last year in a varsity girl's sectional final.
The strange thing about it was I had 2 OT the night before followed by two 3 OT the next two nights.
I started to think it was me.

Brian Watson Mon Feb 05, 2001 09:52am

Don- you're bad luck. Hope everyone in your Assoc. runs away.
