Let's go through the four criteria for a backcourt violation:

- Team Control
- Frontcourt Status obtained
- Team A last to touch in frontcourt
- Team A first to touch after the ball went to the backcourt

Obviously, your play fits the last 3 criteria. According to Rule 4-12-3, team control continues until "The ball is in flight for a try, an opponent secures control, or the ball becomes dead."

Since Team B never secured control of the ball, Team A retained team control throughout the play and a backcourt violation should be called.

Team A has ball in the frontcourt. Team B tips the ball away. In the scramble for the loose ball Team A tips the ball into the backcourt. It is recovered by Team A in the backcourt. Is this a backcourt violation?

Agreed.

Thanks, Ken, for answering this with the criteria. If we approach every BC situation in these terms, there shouldn't be a problem.

(Keeping in mind the two exceptions and one note in 9-9).

Well, i pilfered the nifty idea of explaining backcourt violations by its four discrete criteria from Mark Padgett, so he deserves the credit...

Speaking of Mark Padgett, where has he been anyway?

So that's who I stole it from? I couldn't remember.

I've just been incredibly busy at work working on marketing plans to release two new software products that I haven't been able to check the boards (here and McGriff) until I get home at night AFTER my games. I have had games 14 out of the last 16 days. I'll be off work and games the week between the holidays and maybe I'll catch up. BTW - I heard the most politically correct holiday greeting yesterday: "Have a happy whatever, if anything."
