Girls MS game, coach A had been problematic the entire game and had already received a T for being so. B1 is attempting a free throw, and coach A calls his entire team over to the bench area, despite being told he needed players on the lane. Rather than continue warning, I have my partner administer the free throws, and call a violation if B1 missed the shot. Clearly coach A was attempting to gain an advantage by talking to his team, and in my opinion continually warning without penalty would have accomplished nothing. How would you have handled this situation?

The correct procedure is to instruct the players to fill the bottom two lane-spaces immediately, if they delay in doing so or refuse to comply, it is team technical foul for delay of game.

Ref: 10-1-5b and 10.1.5 Sit C part (b)

OK thanks its right there in 10.1.5(c) I thought for some reason this penalty only applied if it involved the free thrower, but I was obviously wrong there. Thanks.

If B1 is shooting the free throws for the technical foul charged to Coach A, why would there be any players along the free throw lane?

I believe that you would only use the delayed violation if this FT had been immediately after a TO. In that case, you use the Resuming Play Procedure.

That's not what he said. He said "B1 is attempting A free throw..." He didn't so B1 was attempting a technical foul FT. He mentioned that Coach A had previously received a T.

SMEngmann, just remember that the FT shooter AND two defenders in the first spaces are required on the lane for a FT. Therefore, it's a T if any of those positions are not filled.

Mark, I'm guessing the T was earlier in the game and that these FTs were for something else entirely.

Yeah the free throws had nothing to do with the T just to clarify.

Ten lashes with a wet noodle for not reading the post more carefully.
