If anyone saw Sports Center last night or this morning, you may have seen 'Top Plays.' If you did, then you saw the kid who tried to save the ball, the ball went towards the rim and got caught by the net, went above the rim (while still entangled in the net), went through the rim from above the rim, and the ref counted 2! If you did in fact see the play, I'd be curious to hear thoughts as to whether the 2 was actually 2 (I don't see why wouldn't be???) or if you would have disallowed the points? If you didn't see the play, you probably shouldn't reply because I did a <font size +2>terrible job of describing the play and you'll have no idea what I'm talking about! Can anyone describe it better?

One of the luckiest shots i've ever saw. A1 dives out of bounds, catches the ball in his right, flips it to his left while he's still off the ground. Then he takes the wall, whips it from his left hand around his back and it almost goes through the hoop backwards, then it gets caught in the mess, and somehow rolls up above the rim, and into the basket. DOn't think he'll be doing that shot again. I see no reason as to why it wouldn't count.

Very cool!

Basket looked good.

During the last five minutes of Sportcenter.
Plays of the day, I believe.
Try to see it. ;)

As Dave would say (and has said when there is an unreal shot)

"I bet the next guy to try that gets H-O-R-S!"

Basket from below

I don't believe the way you described the play that it could be counted as two points. NFHS 5-1-1 " A goal is made when a live ball enters the basket from above and remains in or passes through...". This scenario has the ball entering from below going above and then through from above. What would prevent any one from throwing the ball from under the basket through from the bottom and having it drop back down for two points.
What am I missing here?

MOFFICIAL Tue Jan 30, 2001 02:44pm

I found what I'm missing!

What I'm missing is the ball did not go through backwards. It somehow was diverted by the net and crawled over the rim and through from above. I'd love to see that!

I did not see the replay.

Do I understand it correctly that the ball never went thru from the bottom of the rim first? Only that the ball somehow got twisted up with the net and ended up on top of the rim (not thru from the bottom) then dropped thru.

I sure don't know why this would be a good field goal.

Are my assumptions correct, let me know.. Who saw it?

I think your understanding of the play is essentially correct.

And, you're correct that it's not a field goal.

It is, however, two points for the team whose basket the ball went through.

You have to see this play if at all possible. Unbelievable! I thought it went it backwards the first time I saw it but after second ruling you just can't believe your own eyes!

The ball did not enter the basket from below, it merely brushed by the mess.
it did not, i repeat did not go through the hoop backwards.
you'll notice in my original post how it said almost,,,

"Count It"- There was nothing wrong with it other than it was unusual
