Ok, I am thinking about switching to under armor for my undershirts this year. I sweat a lot (hold your comments JR) and I've found that cotton doesnt really do well with sweat. It seems like it just gets wet and lays on you and worse, unless you can wash it 5 min after your game, it doesnt take much to get the funk going again the next game.
So the questions are: 1) have you switched? 2) Like / dislike, why, why not? 3) Know of another brand thats cheaper / essentially the same thing? 4) Know a good place to get em cheaper than underarmor.com ($25ea) ? Thanks Larks |
definitely better than a cotton t'shirt...
holds all the sweat in, and it helps with feel a lot better...not at all bulky like when you have a t-shirt on too...i hate the two shirts thing!!!! But 25 bucks is great deal on them... i have been paying 29 |
A friend found a shirt just like under armor but cheaper at Walmart. He said it does the job just like under armor. Said his ran about 10 bucks.

I wear an InteraWear black V.

McDavid
I wear the McDavid brand. They make a V-neck shirt that works well and you cannot see under the striped shirt. I also use the McDavid ankle length tights. Both keeps the sweat off of you and keeps the rest of you body cool and your muscles warm.

2) It's really nice. It keeps me dry, I'm not to sure about being any cooler though. |
I too wear the stuff from WalMart. They do have a brand that sells for $10 but sometimes you can find the starter brand there for $15.
|
I've been wearing Under Armor for about a year. I like it a lot. It feels much lighter than a T. It takes care of the sweat better, as well. However, after a year of blatantly disregarding the "no fabric softener" rule, mine don't seem as good with sweat now. I'll most likely replace them and wash them more obediently next time.

I have been looking to getting armor undershirt, but have to find them for under $40.00 at any of the sporting Goods stores. I will have to check at Wally world.

Mick, are you talking about the no-name Walmart stuff or are you talking about any underarmor-type shirt?

But I am familiar with InteraWear, Patagonia and Dri-eight. It has been my observation that the less you pay the farther away you should stand from game participants. ;) mick |
Haven't tried anything but UA. I wore them through 2 tours in Iraq and also on the court. They don't show the sweat, breathe well, and are comfortable to wear. You can get the type that is skin tight or they also make a loose fitting one. They have made products like this for years for bicycling.
You can get them cheaper if you want to take a flight over to Doha (Kuwait). But it is a long flight and they don't sell beer over there. |

Thanks, Dudly! mick |
It's just a job, ask anyone. Going back for a third time soon.

A third tour? Wow! My utmost respect to you, Dudly...thank you for your service!

I have tried both the Under Armor and McDavid Compression and they both work great to keep the sweat off and you cool. I prefer McDavid since I have not been able to find a UA V-neck. The normal crew neck is not comfortable when you wear it with the V-neck stripes. In addition, I can save a buck with McD ($24).
|
I don't think the stuff at Wal-mart is V-neck.
|
I've tried 3 kinds: McDavid Intera, Nike Dri-Fit, and InSport CoolMax (all sleeveless v-neck). The McDavid fabric is about 3x the thickness of the Dri-Fit with the InSport about halfway between. The McDavid and Nike work about the same with wicking sweat away though the McDavid perhaps keeping a little more heat in.
When worn with a micro-mesh shirt, I find myself immeasurably drier at the end of a game when compared to cotton. When worn with the McDavid Intera Stripes, they both perform about the same but a little short of wearing them with micromesh. When worn with a regular polyester shirt, it helps a some but not nearly as much. As I said earlier, I like the lighter feel of the Dri-Fit. I like the Coolmax the least....mostly the cut/fit of hte one I have is not as good. In anycase, cotton is NOT even close. |
I have yet to wear my Under Armour in a basketball game. I will tomorrow for the first time. I post how it goes. I use the micromesh shirt from Honig's.
I have worn the short-sleve heat gear all summer while officiating soccer and really like it. I am not one for really tight fitting clothes, though, so I bought the XXL. I noticed a very positive difference from the normal T-shirt. I paid $25 for it. |
I tried the Under Armour brand (loose-fitting) for the first time this summer. They were on sale at the camp I attended back in July. I liked the light feel and loved the way it "wicked" the wetness away from my body. Cotton T's just clung to my body and felt...well, you know, cold and clammy. I now own 5 of the loose-fitting, sleeveless variety w/ regular collar (not v-neck). Love'em...

Would that regular collar shirt be a Byron Collar? I thought the regular collar was a V-neck. mick |

The different collars on the undershirts are crew and V. |

Borax is very good for getting smells out of laundry. It can be very hard on fabric, though. I wash my shirts after every wearing, but only use borax about every third or fourth wash. I find this to be adequate. |

Does anyone have problems with Under Armor or any other moisture wicking fabric smelling badly? I've only worn them for 1 game at a time, as I still wore cotton T-shirts on tournaments and long weekends full of games and such. If I switch, will the UA (or whatever) really start to stink over, say, a long Saturday's worth of games?

Tim -- actually not much. I'm in way over my head at my day job, and don't have much extra time. I stopped in at the last meeting to get my check, and saw you there across the room. I tried to wave, but didn't want Debi to see me, so I snuck out without being social. Don't even ask about bball... |

washing UA and related materials
So I've had my Nike version of the same kinda athletic top, and I'm looking to do laundry. I've lost the tag that came with the shirt, and I'm wondering what I can do/avoid in order to make sure the shirt lasts long and doesn't come out all funky. I've heard something about not using fabric softener, but other than that...nothing. Any recommendations?
thanks, Jim |
