NFHS
Just making sure i got this right, if players leave bench NOW for the possiblility of a fight they receive a flagrant technical foul and are ejected just for leaving their bench...and the coach gets an indirect T for this too... the question, if only one teams players leave their bench, do you shoot T's for each player that left the bench or is it considered one Technical for all the players leaving and you only shoot 2 ft's???? i know if both teams had players leave you would go AP arrow...

It depends on whether the players who leave the bench participate in the fight.

If they participate, shoot throws for each. If they don't participate, shoot throws for one T only.

isn't leaving the bench now considered participating??? since they are being ejected, seems like they are considering that participating....but in my sitch, i just said left the bench, nothing else was done by the players from just the one team

In that case, if they leave the bench but don't fight, you disqualify the players, assess the coach one indirect T, and shoot 2 FT. (FED)

would leaving the bench and "Staring" be considered getting involved???? i couldn't resist... :)

The rule change is not that players leaving the bench during a fight now get a flagrant technical -- that was already the rule. The change is that players leaving the bench during the possibility of a fight are now charged with a flagrant technical.

That is, if two A1 and B1 square off on the court and A6, A7, and B6 all run out on the court to join in what they think is about to be a fight, all three bench players (A6, A7, and B6) are charged with a flagrant technical and ejected. In this case you would probably only have a double technical on A1 and B1 since no punches were thrown.

Also, the same rule applies that you shoot a maximum of two free throws when a different number of players comes off each bench. In the above example Team B would shoot 2 free throws. Even if two more team A players had come off the bench, Team B would still only shoot 2 free throws.

Also, Coach A and Coach B will each be assessted an indirect technical foul.

oops. brad is correct. however, the coaches can get charged more than one indirect if a player leaves and then becomes involved.

OK, if I'm understanding you correctly, you said that 4 players from team A and 2 players from team B left the bench, so wouldn't that be 4 FTs for team B instead of just 2?

And also, the Team B coach is not ejected, as he only gets 2 indirects for this as he only had 2 players leave the bench. He doesn't get an indirect for the PLAYER on the court who was fighting, just the two that left the bench.

Am I wrong?

Here's a summary:

1) Players on the court -- all who participate are ejected. Add one foul to the team total for each. No indirects. Shoot throws for any fouls that do not offset.

2) Players leave bench but DO NOT participate -- all who leave are ejected. Add one foul to the team total for each. One indirect, no matter how many players. Shoot throws for ONE foul, if the numbers don't offset.

3) Players leave bench and DO particpate -- all who leave are ejected. Add one foul to the team total for each. One indirect for each. Shoot throws for ALL that don't offset.

4) Coach leaves the bench (and is not beckoned); it doesn't matter whether coach participates or not -- Coach is ejected. Add one foul to the team total. Shoot throws if not offset.

If you have a combination of the above, treat each group separately, then offset whatever is left and shoot throws for any that don't offset.

ONE INDIRECT EACH SHOULD OFFSET

if the players leave the benches and don't participate, if you have 10 from team A and 2 from team B..none participated, so all are ejected, one indirect on both coaches, team fouls for all, BUT YOU ONLY SHOOT 2 THROWS BECAUSE THEY DON'T OFFSET...I THOUGHT SINCE YOU ARE CALLING ONE INDIRECT ON BOTH BENCHES, THEY WOULD OFFSET AND YOU SHOOT "NO THROWS"?????

See 8(b)(1) in the "Summary of Penalties" at the end of Rule 10 in the rule book. That lays it all out.

You don't shoot any throws for ANY indirect Ts. So don't try to offset them.

Offset the number of players who leave but don't participate and shoot a maximum of one T if the numbers aren't equal.
