In a discussion last night during a pickup game, one guy mentioned that it used to be a travel to catch your own air-ball during a HS game.

Is this true? If so, when did it change? They guy was maybe in his mid 30's, so he would have played hs ball shortly before I did, and I don't remember that. But then again, I never caught my own airball, either.

As far as I know, Adam, it's never been a violation to catch a shot that fails to hit the rim in HS. But I'm not that much of a long-timer. I've only been reffing for 12 years. I didn't have a clue what the rules were when I was playing in HS back in the [18]80's. :)

Get MTD to pull down his old rulebooks. He'll probably know for sure. JR might be able to help if he remembered to take his Ginko Baloba this morning.

Thanks, Chuck. My guess is he was misinformed about it in high school by either an older player or an ignorant coach. Or, he had an official call it one time.

I think MTD needs the Ginko Baloba to remember where all his basketball briefcases are :D

Don't know about high school, but when I started reffing (about 18 years ago) it was a travel in FIBA.....

Is it still a travel in FIBA? Never has been in the FED, as far as I know. But everyone thinks it is. Kinda like the belief that you can call traveling on the player doing the throw in.

That was the most shocking revelation during my training class, that the inbounder can take steps (within 3 feet). Another big one, that big time D1 officials make $800 per game.

Not anymore

In the NBA, this is a violation(10-III-d). I suspect many people see this called in the NBA and think that it applies to other levels as well. This is probably the most common myth of the schoolyard and rec league, along with "moving picks" and "over the back".

No it isn't - from memory it changed sometime around the 1988 rule changes...
