At mtn of officials yesterday the following question came up:
Tech foul at halftime. Prior to the start of the third quarter, two free throw are attempted and made, however at the wrong basket. Short of wanting to crawl under a rock, what is the right thing to do?

You have two options. The first is to invoke the correctable error rule (2-10), cancel the free throws and shoot them at the correct end.

The much better solution is to use 4-5-4 which covers the case when the officials permit the teams to go the wrong direction. In this case, all points and fouls count going the wrong direction count and then get the teams going the right direction.

In either case, the shooting team gets the ball at the division line and the AP arrow should not be flipped...

Count the baskets, get 'em going in the right direction, and move on. Invoking a correctible error in this case will only make matters worse...ie, the officials REALLY don't know what's going on.

My response was to count the baskets; get them going the right direction; move on. As for cancelling the baskets and re-shooting them at the other basket, I don't think that I would do it this way. Explain this to a coach when the player now misses his free throws. All because of a brain cramp on the officials part. Don't compound the problem. Try to escape from this situation with as little bloodletting as possible
