I'm heading into New York state in a week or two and was wondering if there is anywhere to refresh my officiating gear. I saw Lester's Upstate Sports, but was wondering if there are any more options to choose from.

Thanks for any help.

umpattire.com has been good to me.
I don't know any of the local sporting good stores up there.

Beer?

Are you old enough to buy beer?

I have ordered mainly from Gerry Davis Sports and Honigs.

I like the Sansabelt pants that GD sells. I have bought just about every thing else from Honigs. I only order Honigs stuff for football but other sports from GD. I have even ordered from +POS but have had problems with their service.

Local

Where about's in NYS are you going? Lester's is about three blocks from me and many of the officials in our area use them. Have had no problems.

On this trip, I am mainly looking for somewhere to physically buy some supplies. I've used Honigs in the past, but on the Canadian side of the border their prices are a bit steep. So, I'm just looking for a place to buy supplies in New York state. I think from what I've heard that Lester's is the way to go.

Dan...I think ref18 is only around 18 years old.
Now, if you want to come out here to the Pacific Northwest I'll be gald to spring for the beer...we can talk about the Seahawks chances of going to the Super Bowl or something. :)

(Come to think of it...if he is from Canada, isn't the drinking age there 18 or 19?)

I'm not even 18, its just the number I wear on the back of my football referee's shirt. ;)

The drinking age depends on the province. Ontario where I'm from is 19, if you want to head over to Quebec its 18. I'm not sure about the others.

The drinking age sucks, because for most of my first year in university I won't be able to legally drink ;)

That's nothing, over here you'd have to wait till you were 21.

Is that a state-by-state thing, or is the drinking age the same across the nation??

In the old days, ...

... Michigan 18-yr.-olds had to go to Ohio or Wisconsin for legal imbibition.

Every state is 21, but I do believe Ohio allows you to drink alcohol at a bar with a guardian.

That is correct. Provided the proprietor allows it. Bless those buckeyes.

I graduated from H.S. in 1969, which was back in the good old days. Back then one could be 3.2 beer if one was 18 yrs of age. To buy any other type of alcohol (including liquor and wine), one had to be 21. At that time a parent could buy alcohol for his/her minor children in a bar or resturant. I am not sure that is the case now, with 21 being the blanket age for all alcohol.

But I remember back in the 3.2 days when I was 22. After a basketball game my partner (was was 24 at the time) decided to go out for dinner together after the game. My partner's wife (who was 20 at the time, they had been married only about six months) and the girl (who was also 21) I was dating at the time attended the game with us. At the resturant, everybody ordered a beer. The waitress carded all of us and refused to give my partner's wife a beer. When my partner ordered two beers for himself, she refused to bring them both at the same time because she said the all he wanted the second beer for was to give it to his wife. So at the time, if my partner had had a minor son or daughter with him he could have bought them a beer, but he could not buy his wife a beer.
