We see it in the pros and sometimes in men's rec leagues, but is it legal?...Player dribbles down the lane, scoops the ball up and off the backboard and retrieves it for a shot attempt/dunk. Legal or illegal? Thanks to all for your input.

Definitely legal or illegal! :)

Seriously, it could be either, depending on what's happening with the feet and hands and ball during this play.

Sleebo, assuming that the player doesn't travel before throwing the ball off the backboard, it is not a travel to catch it off the backboard.

Once the ball is released, it's not possible to travel in this scenario.
