"HOCKEY - In Canada a minor league hockey coach in Hamilton has been charged with threatening to kill a teenage referee following an outburst over a two-minute penalty. Following his ejection from the game, the 34 year-old coach went onto the ice and threatened the youth official in front of his 10 and 11-year-old players and adult spectators. (March 2001)"

Wow, that hits close to home, here's another article on the topic published by the local newspaper.

Abuse of officials is a very pressing issue in this day and age. People don't realize that we give up our time to train and our time to work all of these games so their children can play in a safe environment.

But honestly, who can say that the thought of retaliation to a situation like this has never crossed ones mind?? Most of us just never act upon it.

"FOOTBALL - In October 1996, an ex-Canadian Football League player, punched Bob Lindley, a football official, in a Hamilton Touch Football Association game. The player, Less Browne, was sentenced to 12 months probation, 100 hours of community service, and attendance at anger management counseling."

Wow, now I understand why so many of our officials are reluctant to officiate touch games.

ref18, the original story in this thread isn't about retaliation. it's about the poor state of officiating in south african soccer. Go read the bottom half of that same story on the SI website.

Hmmm, a fully-armed officiating crew would certainly create a more polite basketball environment. Yup, coaches, players, and fans would definitely be better behaved.

If I shot all those who question any of my calls while running up and down the wood court .... I'd have one hell of a hunting season!!!!!
