Did an elementary/Jr.High game tonight and the score was very close so I was calling nit pick fouls. The final score was 36-38. This little girl on the losing team obviously, after i get home im's me and tells me "You did horrible." Now this little girl cant even a basket. What should I do when something like this happens?

Dan_ref Thu Jul 15, 2004 11:04pm

Well, let's see...

Little girl tells you you're horrible. You could

1. Punch her
2. Scream at her
3. Pull her hair
4. Ignore her
5. Puke on her shoes

Seems pretty obvious to me.

BTW, not sure I get the connection between a close score & calling nitpick fouls.

When it was getting close. Towards the 2nd half, the other ref told since the score was so close to call little fouls.

That is so wrong.
Do what Dan tells you to do.

Brandon,

Dan sort of beat me to this, but around here, officials never want to be accused of calling "nit pick fouls". Maybe I'm not understanding what you mean by that phrase, but many of us use it to describe a hand check foul that was called b/c the defender "measured up" one time, for example. Or a rebounding foul where the inside player got bumped, but still came down with the ball without being dislodged. Yeah, there's contact in those situations, but many of us would rather let the play continue.

Also, how did this "little girl" get your username to IM you? Why do you care what this "little girl" said to you over the computer?

Call your game consistently, regardless of the score, and don't respond to IM's from little girls. Us old guys get arrested for doing that. ;)

I know this ref, he's the same one that told me that politics are keeping him from moving up.

Seriously, I'd be changing my IM right about now, and not telling too many people the new one. She definitely needs to not be able to contact you in that way. I wouldn't respond to her online, but if she says something in the hall at school, I'd say, "Here's my assignor's phone number. Tell him." And then get away, fast. And don't ever ref games with girls you're interested in. You don't want to have to get away fast, from them!

Brandon...I wonder if the other official was telling you to "tighten it up" a bit...you might have thought he meant to call the "little stuff" when if fact he wanted you to just keep on top of everything in this close game.

Also, is your 89 behind your name the year you were born? (1989)?

SMEngmann Thu Jul 15, 2004 11:45pm

I'm with everyone here as to the nit-picky fouls thing. I do think, though, that it's better for a first year official to call too many fouls when he/she's just starting out. By doing so, I think you get a better understanding of what a foul is and it helps to develop judgement.

As for the little girl's IM thing, that's pretty weird, but you have to credit her resoucefulness. Just as long as those who I ref don't find out my IM.

He told me good game, the score is close so call "nit-pick" fouls. That was his words. I am defently not interested in her at ALL. LOL
