Reffing a boy's varsity game last night. Team A has a 6'10" kid that is active, but not real talented. He goes for an offensive rebound but doesn't time it very well and arrives at the rim after the ball has already bounded away. For no apparent reason (no contact, nobody under him), he grasps the rim and gives it a good pull, causing the collapsible rim to snap down and back into place.

While the rule book allows us to call a T at any time for grasping the rim, how many of you would T that up instantly? How many would not call the T and talk to the kid at next opportunity? Other options?

Thanks,

Z

My first thought is to T him up right there. It is one of those things that everyone can see, everyone knows it is wrong...and you will get the "why didn't you T him up" from the opposing coach. I know there are many arguments for not T'ing him up...I just happen to believe you should.

I agree. I'm not looking to bring out the technical whenever I can but here the kid made a simple mistake; he mis-timed his jump and the bucket went. No problem. I had a kid last night do the same thing. Only, last night he did not pull it down (just briefly grabbed it). That gives me the opportunity to let him know going up the court to stay off the rim. Good game management.

In this case, the player gives the rim a good pull and snaps it down. I'm going to have a hard time not calling this one a T. This would depend on game management.

The fact that everyone is yelling doesn't bother me.:)

Agree. Call it now in summer ball, and you (or any of your brethren) shouldn't then have to worry about it happening next season. Teaches the kid a lesson NOW.

Me too...but I'm left wondering what Byron Kennedy might say about this?

Depends on what path the ball leaves the rim. ;)

If he mistimed his jump and fouled an opposing player would you pass on calling this? I doubt it. The kid committed a foul; call it.
