Im a still a relitivily new referee and i recently had a situation involving goaltending in one of my matches. Only thing is no one has ever told me clearly what the signal is for it. I have looked in the rule books and they dont seem to help either

Can some one please tell me the correct signal for goaltending?

I've asked this question a time or two myself, and never gotten a clear answer. THere is no "official" signal. You stop the clock with a whistle and a violation signal, count the basket using the signal you'd use after a foul on a shot, and then look at the score table to be sure they understand, give the ball on the endline with running privileges. I think.

Yeah thanks.

All that I have really been told is to do that and to use whatever is needed to "sell" the call

rainmaker,
You nailed it!
The same is true for defensive BI. For offensive BI, you instead give the no basket (wave-off) signal and it is a designated-spot throw-in.
NO TOILET BOWL signals, please!

lol

Is there any other calls that dont have offical signals that i should be aware of?

Ya, on a spoted inbound you will see some official call traveling and do the travel mechanics when there is no such thing. What you have is just a violation, so just blow ur whistle and say inbound violation and point to the opposite direction afterward at least thats how I was told to do it.
Unless there's a mechanic on it that I don't know about.
Unless you guys have an better way for this call let me know.

Ok, I'll have to keep that in mind...

Goaltending? That is for the sport of Hockey....in basketball it is referred to as Basket Interference.

On a kick ball violation, don't stand with your back to the table, bend over forward keeping your legs straight, lick your finger then touch your toe, all while staring into the eyes of the table crew.

I have been told by several assignors that this is not the proper mechanic.

Am I missing something here? Goaltending is NEVER referred to as basket interference in basketball. They are two completely different violations, and as such are covered in two separate sections in the rule book- i.e. R9-11 & R9-12.

And yes, I did see the smilie. I'm still confused.

Goaltending DOES have and official signal.

As others have said...

By offense: whistle, open hand up, wave off basket.
By defense; whistle, open hand up, count the basket.

The call is pretty clear when you count a basket that didn't go in or wave off one that does (and you haven't signaled anything else).

terminology

After reading this thread, I went to the book.

4-6 Basket Interference
4-22 Goaltending

the rules are somewhat different, so are the signals different?
