I had one this sunday. Working with a seasoned veteren in the chapter during a 14U AAU girls tourny on saturday. 2 man crew - i was headed down the court as new lead and the defender that was following the dribbler peels off i get set on the end line. Another defender sets up, legaly obtains postion and BAM! textbook charge out of a boys game. I called it and my paretner looked at me funny. It was defintly something to talk about in the locker room at half-time.

I don't get it. What's so strange about a charge call in a girls' game?

I'm confused too...

If anything I have more PC fouls in girls games. They tend to chicken wing the defense more than the boys.

Maybe the first defender that peeled off was the player who ran over the other defender! That would draw some funny looks.

Or perhaps this girls AAU tournament was being played with NCAA women's rules and the defender was under the basket where the call has to be a block.

I'm not sure if this is universal or not, but around here the good girls' teams tend to be more fundamentally sound; hence better defensive position.

Ace, why was this not normal? How did your conversation go at half time?

"Lucy, you got some 'splainin to do." Ace, you've got us all confused.

Hawks Coach Wed May 26, 2004 07:02am

We play great defense, try to draw at least one charge per game. I guess it is considered to be just a boys thing, but methinks Ace is sadly mistaken.

If anything, there are not enough PC Fouls called period. And that does not matter what side of the gender we are talking about.

Peace

Hawks Coach Wed May 26, 2004 08:56am

got that right!

I dont know, maybe its because I only called a few girls games here and there this season but I just dont see defenders getting in the way and standing there to take a charge. My partner had called some girls varsity games this past year and he said he only saw a few actual charges the past year. Now player control we had a lot of girls throwing the elbow and what not. We only averaged about 5 jump balls a game though so that wasnt too bad. I dont know. I just dont see girls getting out and staying int he line of a drive like guys do. The coach said that was the first time anyone had called a charge on any of players and that i must of have missed something.

If his player never charged before, clearly they couldn't have done it this time. What were you thinking when you called that? You should study the player history more before you go to call a game :)
