quick question...if you recieve a techincal foul and your team is over the bonus, does the technical foul count towards the bonus? there was an incident in a game that i was in where my team was over the bonus and we commited a foul to stop the clock, then i got a technical for arguing the call. so the ref gives the other team 2 shots for the bonus, 2 shots for the tech, but then he gave the other team an extra 2 free throws saying that the tech counts towards the bonus and they get 2 more. didnt sound right 6 throws in one play? get back to me please, thanks.

No, the other team should have gotten only 2 for each foul over 10.

However, because of your unsporting act maybe the official T'd you again and you didn't even know it?

zebra44 Mon May 24, 2004 03:40pm

Your opponents should get 2 FTs plus ball at half court. That's it.

SamIAm Mon May 24, 2004 03:56pm

I will raise you, 4 FTs and the ball at half court. Presuming by bonus you mean 10 fouls and not 7 fouls.

Adam Mon May 24, 2004 03:57pm

Sounds like someone doesn't quite know exactly what "counts towards the bonus" means. That's what I get for thinking that it's self-explanatory.

Wow, amazing (if true) lapse in logic.

Huh? Why would you be arguing if you wanted a foul to be called and one was called?

Mark Padgett Mon May 24, 2004 04:37pm

Actually, if the official would have called this properly, the bonus would not be a factor at all.

Two shots for the intentional foul for fouling just to stop the clock, two for the technical then the ball at the division line.

rainmaker Mon May 24, 2004 04:41pm

There are places which don't use straight high school rules that give 2 shots plus 2 points plus the ball. Perhaps this was in a place like that and the ref was confused? Or perhaps this venue does have an extra penalty for T's when you're in the bonus?

He said his team was over the limit and the opponents were in the bonus. THat means we're shooting eith 1&1 or 2 shots for the foul and two shots for the T, plus the ball at the division line.

Sorry, Coach. Couldn't help myself on that one either.:D

my mistake, we had the man trapped along the baseline, and the man had no where to go, the ref called a bogus foul, thats why i got a tech for it. yes our intention was to foul to stop the clock, but since we had the man trapped in the baseline, we didnt foul, but the ref called one anyway and t'ed me up. so they shot 2 free throws cause they were in double bonus, and 2 for the tech. i understood that, but he ref claimed that since we were over the double bonus limit, the tech counts towards that and entitles the other team to another 2 free throws. now that i dont get right?

Are you saying he got four free throws or six? I'm not sure I follow what you are saying. Also, was this a season high school game? Or a rec league that uses different rules?

They should not have shot those last 2 free throws. I would suggest you get your hands on a set of rule books and be in a better position to argue your case with the official. This is a correctable error if it is recognized by the official during the first dead ball after the clock has properly started. Perhaps you would get further with the officials if you used a bit more diplomacy and could get your point across without getting a technical.

Yeah, you got screwed on the number of FTs. But I'll say this too - generally when we're at a point in the game where a strategic foul is expected to stop the clock a good official will give it. And generally a good coach will take the foul, keep his mouth shut and hope his opponent misses his FTs. Even if he thought his team might have been in a good position when "the bogus" foul was called.

I'm not defending your officials, I'm just pointing this out to you so you'll know how to act if I happen to work one of your games ;)

Coach, if Team B has committed 10 fouls and B1 then fouls A1 while shooting and the ball goes in, A1 doesn't get to shoot the free throw for continuation, then the 2 for the double bonus.

Advice from a trusted official: One foul can only be penalized one time.

Similar situation. What if a B1 intentionally fouls A1 during a shot, and the shot falls. Does A1 get a) just 1 shot for the continuation, b) 2 for the intentional, or c) 3 for both?

Answer: B, an intentional foul is awarded 2 shots and the ball. Any continuation or bonus free throws are overridden by the nature of the intentional call.

Someone let me know if I'm wrong.
