Guys, I have a fairly short pre-game and I say EXACTLY the same thing every time. If I don't have a good speech memorized, I'll forget something and make myself look stupid before the game even starts.
First, I introduce myself and my partner. Then, I say "OK coaches, are both teams legally and properly equipped?" "Good. OK, I want to remind you that is a high school level sporting event and sportsmanship is of the utmost concern." Then, I'll ask my partner if he has anything to add. "Any questions? OK, then you can go on about your business."
Once the coaches leave, I ask my speaking captains to identify themselves. I tell them they are the only ones who are allowed to speak with the officials on the court and that we expect them to remain in control of their teams at all times. I also tell the captains to make sure that no one is wearing jewelry and I point out any strange lines on the court. Once again, I ask if my partner has anything to add. After that, I wish good luck to both teams, we shake hands, and we're ready to roll.
