just got this in an email from a friend in Houston,
anybody know if this was a game, practice or just school?




BAY CITY, Texas -- A 17-year-old student collapsed and died while playing basketball at his high school.

Chris McAffee of Bay City was running up and down the court during his Thursday afternoon athletic period when he collapsed, Bay City superintendent Richard Walton said.

The school nurse, coaches and the athletic director called 911 and immediately began performing CPR, the Victoria Advocate reported in its online edition Saturday.

McAffee was taken to Matagorda General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after he arrived.

"There was no notice of anything wrong with him prior to his collapse," Walton said. "This is our worst nightmare -- to lose a kid like this."

Walton said an autopsy would determine the cause of McAffee's death. Justice of the Peace Aaron Green said McAffee apparently had a previously undiagnosed heart condition.

From the looks of the article, it looks like it happened in PE class.

Atheltics... Much different than Phys Ed here in Texas. Athletics is year-round focused on the specific sport/sports you play. Mostly in the big schools in the Houston Area.. it allows the coaches to keep track and train the players sport and position specific.


Thats unfortuante. Unfortunatly it hits close to home for more than just one reason.

Most such cases involve a previously undiagnosed cardiac condition with no other warning symptoms. Occasionally there are minor symptoms which are not brought to a physician's attention because they seem to be mild, transient, or inconsequential. The bottom line, of course, is that a student/athlete is dead and the family, friends, and school district must deal with the emotions that follow such a tragic incident. The saddest part of this is that these things are almost completely unpreventable due to the general absence of symptoms before the fatal event.

Very true...in my case, i think the individual was on drugs :(

Well, I know that went the 13 year old died on my court it was because he had a condition inwhich the only symptom for a kid his age is unforturantly and crudly death. Brent had an enlarged heart. Soemthing only to be found by a 12 PT EKG or an autopsy.
