I've read Earl Strom's book and he talks a lot about fellow officials John Vanak and Joe Gushue. I've gotten bits and snippets of Gushue's career in the pros, but hardly nothing about Vanak. When did they retire? Was Gushue forced out? Did they officiate finals games? What are they now? Thanks in advance!

Don't know when Gushue retired, but I do know that both he and Earl left the NBA to work for the ABA back in the 70s. They both had problems with the ABA, were terminated, and tried to get back in the the NBA which initially didn't want to take them back. They hired an attorney that was successful in getting them reinstated. His name? Richie Phillips. That's the same guy who would represent Major League Baseball Umpires decades later and lead them down the disastrous road where many resigned and never got their jobs back. I wonder if his experience with Joe and Earl led him to believe he could win the MLB disagreement?
