Just was wondering how many states are using the 3-man crews? i ran into a fellow referee today that is from illinois, he was doing a national wheelchair tourney today in minnesota where i am from. We ended up talking about why we need to go to 3-man, and he said that in illinois they work 1 varsity game for 65.00 per game. i told him that where we are located in rural minnesota that the small schools around here couldnt afford it. He said that that is hog wash. He thought that the booster clubs could raise the money in the off season to pay the extra cost. i thought that that was a good idea. i know he said that in kentucky they are 3 man all the time. just was curious as too what everyone else is doing?

Right now, Nevada is 3-man for both girls and boys large school varsity during the season and playoffs.
That almost changed last year, and may change for next year though. There is a push by the administrators to revert to 2-man. |
Wisconsin is 2-man right through and including the state tournament. However, in the regular season the schools/conference are all allowed to hire three if they wish.

Here in the U.P. (Mi.) if crews work 3 whistle they split the 2 whistle pay 3 ways. The tourney uses 2 whistle for the District level, then 3 starting at the next (Regional) level.
|
In New Hampshire 2 man crew during year-3 man crew starting with quarter finals of States |
Wyoming is two whistle all the way through state. There were a couple early season tournaments that requested 3 whistle crews...I don't know if the went ahead with that or not. But maybe the winds of change are upon us here...no wait the wind is always upon us here in Wyoming....:D

Here in WA. st. the high schools are aloud 3 man if
they want to pay for them. 3 man was use in the Blue Mnt. regionals, a B level division. I haven't heard any feedback yet on that. All other games and playoff were done 2 man Carl |
In Ontario, Canada, all games are played with two officials. The only time i've seen three referees doing a high school game was in the Silver Fox finals.
|
The wonderful state of Kansas is three man all year. Some leagues decided to go to 2-man a year ago and couldn't get any officials to take their games because of it. Now, they are back to 3.

What area of the state, I would assume the eastern part. Did you have a chance to work or enjoy any state tournament action this weekend?
|
Nebraska uses 2-whistle for district and state tournament play. The Metro Conference in Omaha used 2-whistle most of the season. There were 3 tournaments in Omaha that utilized the 3-whistle, one being the Metro Conference Holiday Tournament.

Ref Ump Welsch-
You were correct for the most part but there were also many schools in the western part of Nebraska that used 3-person crews. Its sad and hard to believe that Omaha and Lincoln are so far behind; not just nationally, but also behind the rest of the state as far as using 3-person crews. |
In Utah we have 2 man crew for reg. and post season, I wish they do 3 man.
Last yr we practice 3 man at a camp where we had no choice but to practice it cause there were more refs than team at this camp, they say it is good that we do because they predict that the next 3 to 5 yrs about 80% of the other states will have 3 man crew and that Utah will have to go that route too. |
In northern VA, we are 3-person for all GV/BV all the way through the state finals. Been this way for a couple of years.

BOBBYMO, thanks for mentioning that some of our counterparts in the western part are using 3-whistle crews. That surprises me that the Metro or Lincoln still haven't made the full switch. But what really gets me is that the state tournament is still 2-whistle all the way. It should be a 3-whistle thing.
Also, South Dakota is a little screwy if I'm right. I was in Sioux Falls this past weekend working a regional adult tournament, and had the opportunity to tune into the girls state finals on the tube. The guys I worked with in the tournament mentioned that the AA girls tournament was using 3-whistle. I assumed they were all using it, till I watched the A final, which was 2-whistle. I'm planning to check the South Dakota state association's website later to see if I didn't misunderstand my fellow zebras or if that is in fact how they run things up there. |

In California, 3 person is used at all divisions during the state playoffs. Some regular season and tournament games are 3 person if it is requested. In San Diego, 3 person is used for the semi-final and finals. Coaches take here on 3 person crews are mixed, none of which has anything to do with money. Its a matter of having enough officials trained on the mechanics.
|
In Indiana...
We use 2-person at the first playoff level --> Sectionals We use 3-person at the rest of the levels --> Regionals, Semi-state, & State If our IHSAA had any testicular fortitude, they'd mandate 3-person throughout. |
Here in Michigan, it is basically 2-man in your small schools and big conferences. 3-man in big schools and big conferences.
State tournament wise, it is 2-man for the districts and 3-man the rest of the way. However, the basketball committee has approved a resolution for 3-man to start getting used in the district round starting in 2004, but the official ruling has to be announced from what some are saying. However, some others are saying that it is official that Michigan basketball tournaments will be officiated with 3-man crews through all rounds starting this year 2004. |
Missouri
2 whistle for all state games this year Schools voted to go to 3 whistle for 3, 4 & 5A classes next year. Most larger schools in southeast Missouri are using 3 whistle. We're hoping for the trickle down effect. |
Good ol' boys
Assuming that the Good Ol' Boy system is alive and well in other states besides Wyoming: The powers that be will have to go to 3-man to keep the old-timers on the floor. Eventually they will all get broken hips and god knows who will ref our state tournaments after that.
