Help..
No rule book at office, but my buddies said that they would believe me if this board gives the explaination and could site the rule for them.

When does the clock start after a missed free throw?
Thanks in advance.

When the ball is legally touched by or touches a player on the court. NFHS 5-9-3.

Yeah.. me too.
They kept saying that some other official started the clock when it touched the floor.

I hate that. "I had an official call it once, so it must be right." They always seem to trust that official from 15 years ago, but not you.
Maybe the official thought it hit a player.

I would "site" the rule in the frontcourt, near the lane. If everyone is lined up correctly for the free throw, I doubt it could be "sited" anywhere else.

I know that was kinda nasty, but I thought the typo was kinda cute...

And besides Mnref14 thinks we-all can't take jokes, but I'm here to prove we can!

You must work with coaches.

And in case he/she/it's paying attention: this post is by one of our field qualified language experts.

Some refs don't know this rule

I had this happen last year, clock started on rim. Ball hit floor and went out to the 3 point line, we rebounded and made the three, only to be told time had expired. Ref said ball is live when it hits the rim (another false understanding of the rules, but hey, what can you do?), so therefore the clock starts when it hits the rim.

Did you ask him why the clock doesn't start when the ball is given to the FT shooter? ;)
But seriously, the ball IS LIVE when it hits the rim on a free throw, since it was live even before then. But, of course, that has nothing to do with the clock starting.

I know you know that. I'm just picking on the way you phrased your post.
