NCAA women's. Tape on the earlobe. What is the rule?

NCAA Rule.
 

You cannot wear jewelry, that is the rule. No matter what you throw on top of it to cover it up. No different than NF Rules. And this is not a rule for just the Women, it is an NCAA Rule.

So, do we ask if the tape is covering an earring? What if she says no?

That is up to you and your assignor how you handle it.

But if it is obvious to you that they are wearing an earring, then they are not suppose to play. They do not have to take the tape off to recognize that fact.

I usually ask why are they wearing a tape? Then they tell me they are and we move on from there.

Tape over an ear is a "RED" flag. Whenever I see tape over an ear, eye brow, or nose (yes I had a player try to hide a nose stud with a bandaid), I ask to see what is under the tape. Ever since jewelry was banned, players have tried to hide it with tape or bandaids. Officials know it and players know that officials know it. It is called due diligence on the part of the official to check under the tape or bandaid. I do not care if it is a high school game or a college game. Do not check under the tape and a player gets seriously hurt because the earring and the player's lawyer is going to ask why you did not check under the tape since it is a well known fact that players try to hide earrings under tape.

Maybe it has been asked before but what about a tongue piercing? I assume it is a no no. In a football game a kid rolled an ankle and when they took his shoes and socks off he had an ankle bracelet on? I did not penalize him because I hate to hit somebody when they are down(late hit - 15 yds) but probably should have as he was carried off the field.

We were told specifically in our association that tongue rings, bellybutton rings, any jewelry is not allowed. Now checking for such things can be an interesting exercise. I would imagine I could get into more trouble checking for bellybutton rings as I would if my association found out a girl was wearing one and I didn't notice it. Can you imagine asking high school girls to pull up their shirts so I could check for a bellybutton ring? "But officer, my association told me to!". ;)

I hope you were told that body-piercing rules were only enforced if there was some sort of accidental exposure, such as might happen in a scuffle for control. That's what I've been told repeatedly in the same association. What I do is point out to captains what the gruesome possibilities are if they DON"T take these items out. Then I don't worry about it.

Yes of course. I was just joking about that part. I don't look for trouble.

There are other... more private places that are getting pierced today... and I'm not checking for those.

No visible jewelry, or taped over jewelry, is good enough for me.

IANAL, but I agree - if they say no (and I can't clearly see one), I believe them and the liability is on the player.

The ladies of a certain sorority come out onto the field, all with their shirts hiked up to their midriffs - kinda hard to miss all the navel rings in this case. :-/ (Usually, you know they're there but can't check.)

If I see tape where a piercing would routinely be, (ear, nose, lip) they will have to show me that the tape is not covering a piece of jewelry.

No wonder the entire eastern part of the USA is covered in ice and snow, Tony agreed with me. LOL
