What are some guidelines to consider as to whether A1 is guilty of travelling, if he is on the floor in possession of the ball, but not on his feet? For instance, is it travelling if he is on his back and rolls slightly onto his side to pass the ball (or for that matter, to call timeout)?

I struggle with this too in Mid Level games you see it a lot. What I look for: Don't try to get up - walking if you do. Don't roll over - walking if you do Don't get to your knees - walking if you do. In short I watch for them to 'get rid' of the ball ASAP. The longer they have it (2 seconds?) one of the above is gonna happen. Also keep a sharp eye on other players fouling to get in on the scrum. A player on the floor not violating the above have protection. Also note that a jump ball can be called when there is no chance the ball will be put freely back into play. Jump might be your best call to insure player saftey and stop a pile developing. LOL |

Agreed. Not the previous comment:
