I saw this recently in a girls high school game and I'm not sure if the ref's call was right. The ref throws up the ball for the opening tip and it goes to a player on team A. A player from team B immediately--and I mean immediately--grabs the ball for a held ball. The ref signalled that the player on team A never had posession and replayed the jump ball. I would have thought that even though the player from team A only had posession for a split second that would have been enough and the ball would go to team B on alternate possession.

Whether Team A had possession or not is up to the official to decide. We have no way of knowing if he was correct or not.

Also the two players who tied it up are the new jumpers.

Good point Bart. I probably wouldn't have thought of that. It would have been like the "old days".

New jumpers? That definitely wasn't done as the ref simply redid the opening jump. Interesting. Thanks for the education.

I didn't know that. Right there in black & white in the case book: 6-3-1 Situation C (c). |
