[High School level] This is a knit-picky thing I'm noticing about myself now. Besides the usual whistle after TO or Intermission, I let all know that the ball is coming in with a quick/short whistle, even OTHER THAN mentioned. Is this mechanically correct or should I just save my breathe?

The latter.

Our evaluators ding us for it, so around here save your breath... I also think that the more situations you blow your whistle, the less impact it will have in general, so only use it when prescribed....

If we are staying and on the end line, I have found using the whistle very helpful. Basically, when the teams are all ganged up near the throw in to keep them from starting their moves until the ball is live.

we get dinged because the book says only after time outs, or long or unusual delays...that is just what it is...I don't think that extra whistles really do any good...they only get the players used to hearing it and closer to disregarding it...just my opinion :)

Depends on the situation for me. Most times, I say "Here we go" as I give the ball to the inbounder. When it's a packed gym and loud, I may give a short blast.

After I make eye contact with my partner I use my voice, "Play!", unless there has been an unusual delay.

Women's NCAA mechanics require lead on baseline to blow a whistle before the ball is placed at the disposal of the thrower. I like it and often find myself wanting to do it during high school games as well. In NFHS games, I tell thrower to "hold your spot" and then also say "Ball's In" when handing it to the thrower. The whistle takes the place of that.
