I was watching BYU-Notre Dame from the 1981 NCAA tourney (The Danny Ainge game), and late in the game ND was playing keep away. Orlando Woolridge had the ball, and was being closely guarded, when suddenly the official called a jump ball, and they jumped it up. BYU gained possession. I realize that the AP arrow is more recent than that, but what's the deal with a jump ball on a closely guarded situation? When did that change?

Years ago, I'm not sure how many but a closely guarded call resulted in a jump ball. Finally, they decided that the defense should be rewarded for thier play. I would say that it's been 15-20 years ago that it was changed.
