Back In The Saddle Tue Jan 06, 2004 09:12pm

Freshman girls game tonight. Two good teams, and well coached. After a PC call, one of the coaches wants to talk. I go over and he steps right next to me and puts an arm around my waist, real cozy-like and says what he's got to say (a legitmate concern, politely expressed). I have never had a coach do this before, and didn't know what to do, so I put my arm around him as well (out of pure habit, I'm an affectionate guy ;)) Entire exchange lasted maybe 10 seconds.

Afterward, however, I got thinking, "What must that have looked like to the other coach?" What should I have done? Pulling away would probably come across to him and his team as a needlessly aggressive. Engaging him in return surely would seem too "cozy" to the other coach and team. Would it have been best to allow him to put his arm on me, but not have returned the gesture? Ideas?

"Coach," you say, stepping away, "you and I both know that our relationship is completely professional and above-board. Let's find a way to be sure everyone else in the gym gets the same idea."

While gently removing his hand from your waist:

"C'mon coach, you know I'm a married man."

Make sure you smile.

"Get your arm off me, Coach, or I'll break it off at the shoulder and beat ya to death with the wet end!"

And that's if I'm in a good mood.

I just looked up the definition of "crusty" and JR's picture was there! :D

Thank you for my first out loud laugh of the day.

Without removing it yourself I would find the words to tell him to take his hands off of you as nice as possible. In the future try not to get that close to a coach. There isn't any top secret information a coach will be telling you so you don't have to be that close.

JR's post was funny.

My natural reaction is:
my left hand on my right rib cage,
my right elbow on my left hand,
my right hand up on my right cheek and slightly covering my mouth.
and a partridge in a pear tree.

You try to keep that in the "bench area", right?
