In pregame I ask each coach CLEARLY to signal timeout length immediatly.

Invariably they don't.

I'm callng after them and yelling into their huddle . COACH?? What is it?

Any better way?

No better way that i am aware of--ask them in the begining to let you know -but after that just ask as you go to report time out

If I get to the reporting area and still don't know what kind of time-out they want, they just bought their team a full time-out. I'm very clear with them about this in the coaches conference and I have never had them squawk about getting a full when they neglected to tell me which kind they wanted.

Since you have to verify the coach is the one requesting the TO, you're (usually) looking at the coach anyway.

Keep looking at him / her and ask as soon as you blow the whistle and announce the TO.

He /She will be looking at you as the TO is called, since they've been trying to get your attention anyway.

True bob - but how many times a games does that happen to you?

Then it is a full.

I simply ask the coach, "what do you want?" They usually respond and say. If they do not, I give the a full timeout. It is that simple. I would say that most of the time it does not even come to that.

Peace

I hate it when they want a 60 second (not "Full" :) ) timeout and just ignore you, rather than tell you.

Since I started asking earlier rather than later, I've been getting the answers more clearly.

I let them know in pre-game that they will get a full if they dont specify while asking for one. I make sure they understand this. But it never fails, they dont and I have to hit them with a full!

I find out each head coach's first name before the game. In the heat of the action, they often forget to tell you what they want for a TO no matter what you pre-game with them...but you'll get their attention almost always if you use their first name. If they ask for one and don't specify, yell:

"Bob, full or thirty?"

I give him 2 chances to reply or it's a full. It has only been unsuccessful 1 time in the 3 years I've been doing it. The one time it was unsuccessfull, coach didn't get too mad!

I do not advise calling a coach by his first name.

JRutledge Tue Dec 23, 2003 12:40pm

Explain please?

I might know why, but everyone else might not.

Peace
