guys:

i saw this happen at the maui classic...and it happened to me last week...let me know how you would have handled it...

late in the 2nd half, foul on a25. it was a25's 5th, but the table did not inform the new trail of dq. b12 steps to the line for 2 shots (double bonus). i bounce b12 the ball for his first ft attempt. in his ft motion, the horn goes off indicating the 5th foul on a25. he makes the 1st.

would you allow the ft?

BktBallRef Sun Dec 07, 2003 05:22pm

Yes, you allow it. The ball is live. The horn is of no consequence.

jr Sun Dec 07, 2003 05:34pm

what if he missed the 1st attempt?

If the ball is away- Nothing
If the ball is still in the shooters hands get it back straighten things out, and start over

I will once gain harp on the know the game situation mantra so this does not sneak up on you!

That works, adoption of adaptation.

The players is not officially DQ'ed until the table notifies the official. On the first try, he was still a legal participant, so you have nothing to fix.

It's about the intruding sound of the horn:

"Hear the loud alarum bells-
Brazen bells!
What a tale of terror, now, their turbulency tells!
In the startled ear of night
How they scream out their affright!
Too much horrified to speak,
They can only shriek, shriek,
Out of tune,
In a clamorous appealing to the mercy of the fire,
In a mad expostulation with the deaf and frantic fire,
Leaping higher, higher, higher,
With a desperate desire,
And a resolute endeavor,
Now–now to sit or never,
By the side of the pale-faced moon.
Oh, the bells, bells, bells!
What a tale their terror tells
Of Despair!
How they clang, and clash, and roar!
What a horror they outpour
On the bosom of the palpitating air!
Yet the ear it fully knows,
By the twanging,
And the clanging,
How the danger ebbs and flows:
Yet the ear distinctly tells,
In the jangling,
And the wrangling,
How the danger sinks and swells,
By the sinking or the swelling in the anger of the bells-
Of the bells-
Of the bells, bells, bells,bells,
Bells, bells, bells-
In the clamor and the clangor of the bells!" - Poe

If he missd the shot and the ball was still in his hand when the horn sounded, I would be inclined to give him another FT.

This is collage, and I don't know the ruling but, in the NFSH, a25 commits his 5th foul. In this situation, why penaltize b12 for something the scorekeeper fail to detect. In NFHS the rule permits the referee to delay the second FT, notify a25 coach, notify a25, bring in the replaced player for a25 and continue with b12 second FT--------I think!

jr Mon Dec 08, 2003 09:01am

here's what i did...

b12 missed the 1st ft, i said 'due to the horn'. we dq'd a25 and the sub came in. we then shot 2.

i think if b12 made the shot, i would have counted it due to an 'inadvertant horn'.

i don't know if that is right, bit until someone shows me in the rule book, that's what i will continue to do.
