A1 fouls B1. B1 gets ready for 1-and-1 bonus.

Team A calls timeout.

We line up to shoot free throws. B1 shoots his first shot, it's good. Partner has ball. Buzzer goes. I (in T position), turn around - B6 is at the table, wanting to sub.

Can B6 enter the game?

Yes, as long as the ball has not yet been placed at the disposal of the free throw shooter.

I though the buzzer would be to let you know that B1 should be shooting, not A1 :)

Ah, it was a trick question. Boy, do I feel dumb.

There, changed it. Smarta**es.

Boy, can't get anything past you guys.

The reason I asked is I had this situation recently, and my partner blew his whistle, ran and told me that we couldnt' allow the sub, because the FT's were immediately after a timeout - and subs are only allowed between the end of the timeout and the first FT. I looked in the NCAA rulebook (sorry should have specified NCAA instead of Fed), no case mentioned.

Your partner was wrong. If the sub doesn't report before the warning horn, he can't enter the game until the next time subs can legally enter. That comes during the next dead ball after the ball has become live, or in this case, after the first FT.

Or by the gals. I don't mean to give away any secrets, but nine01c is Maryann. ;)

Oh yeah, right...

I also forgot to mention we were working 3-person that game, too. :D

Thanks, but no offense taken when referring to "guys," etc. I don't go for that politically correct stuff. The use of he/she, his/hers, him/her in the NFHS books and rules tests is overkill, I think. Plus it makes for more difficult flow of reading the passage. I mean we all KNOW that boys AND girls are players (and officials). Keep it simple and just say 2-man, 3-man, etc. Guess I'm just used to it since I've been umpiring baseball for nine years and am just "one of the guys."

Now you guys all have a nice day and a Happy Thanksgiving!
I am NOT trying to start a new thread.

using Fed rules for this sitch, doesn't the sub have to wait until the next opportunity to sub after the clock has started? Even if the last free throw is successful?

Only if s/he subbed out during the time the clock was stopped for the FTs.

I handled scoreboard operations for a JV game last weekend. We had the same scenario take place. The sub got to the table during administration of the first FT. I wasn't sure of the rule, so didn't blow the horn after the free throw was shot. The coach called out "sub". The official turned around, turned back to his partners, shrugged, then motioned in the sub. I suspect the coach was just trying to ice the shooter.
