Article 5 A goal is made when a live ball enters the basket from above....

So a ball enters from below.. breaks the plan of the rim from above and

a. bounces out onto the court--- play on

b. goes back through the basket- clearly no goal.. but is it play on or a violation--- I know I should know this..can't find it in the rules....

Stew, it's a violation against whomever touched it last if the ball goes completely above the rim from below.The violation occurs as soon as the ball clears the rim on the way up. It doesn't matter what happens after that.Rules references are R9-4 and case book play 9.4SITUATION.
