Whistle required?
 

During a throw-in, the ball is passed across the court and goes out of bounds, touching no player. Because of the violation, the opponent now has a throw-in at the original spot.

We know this play/rule.

Does anyone know of any documentation (manual, mechanics document, etc.) that requires an official to blow their whistle when the throw-in pass goes out of bounds without touching anyone? Would love to see it if you do.

Do you? Do you really know how this rule works currently?

I’ll need to consult the mechanics manual for a citation, but yes a whistle by the official responsible for the boundary line where it exits is going to have a whistle for the throw-in violation.

Are there any violations for which we do not blow the whistle?

Whether one is technically required or not, what's the purpose of the whistle?

If nobody blows a whistle, are people to think, the last whistle pertained to the original throw-in, so if there's not another whistle, that throw-in is still pending or under way? So is there a chance the player says, "Gimme that ball back, I'm still throwing it in"?

I do not think you will find anything specific, other than when a violation takes place, we tend to blow our whistle. If you know of a violation that we would not blow the whistle, I would like to know. But sounds simple if I cause a violation like this I would not blow my whistle the moment the ball hits the out-of-bounds line or area, I would not have a whistle as we normally do.

Free throw shooter misses everything on the first of two free throws.

Why rub it in?

Free throw violation by a defensive player in the lane. It is a delayed violation, so we withhold the whistle until the result of the free throw is known. If an offensive player violates, we kill the free throw attempt immediately. If the free thrower scores, we ignore the free throw violation by the defensive player.

I was thinking the same thing, but a delayed violation isn't quite the exact same thing as a "real" violation.

We also have a delayed violation for a player who voluntarily runs out of bounds, not a "real" violation unless first to touch inbounds with an advantage.

And don't get me started on delayed technical fouls for defensive players faking being fouled regarding team control.
