Illinois High School Association - Shot clock Rules
 

The IHSA has added some shot clock rules for this year that are not along with the NF directly.

• Added 20-second resets.
  
• Added 10-second visible count (stupid IMO).
  
• Got rid of the closely guarded count on a dribbling ball handler.

Nevada added the shot clock for this coming season.
The state office implemented several of the optional rules that the NFHS mentions.
1. Eliminated closely-guarded while dribbling.
2. Any new offensive possession which starts with a throw-in or rebound (including from a missed FT) in the frontcourt will trigger a 20-second shot clock reset instead of 35.
3. Defensive fouls and violations which occur when the shot clock is below 20 seconds will trigger a short reset to 20 seconds.

Way too complicated for the HS level in my opinion. They should have kept it simple and just did a full reset to 35 on everything.

Honestly, this is the part I agree with the most. This 20-second reset for many things is not something most officials can handle, and we should have stayed away from this aspect of the rule. Works in college, but we are trained to know this, and a smaller staff.

In Illinois, at least, this is not used in all postseason games and only for the regular season if the teams agree to use it for non-conference and sometimes conference play. Next year, it will be used for all regular-season games and postseason tournaments, so we have a year to get out the kinks.

All true. The administrators don’t seem to grasp the vast and varied number of people involved with officiating and scoring/timing for the HS games. The training isn’t consistent or as thorough. The complications are just going to cause unneeded problems.

Nevada is one year ahead of Illinois and following the same implementation plan.
Nevada did the optional shot clock in non-league games last year. This year it is mandatory for all varsity games, including postseason.

This been in the NAGWS and NCAA Women's Rules for women's college for well over 50 years. NAGWS adopted it from the FIBA Rules. I personally would like to see this adopted by the NFHS whether or not a Shot Clock is used.

Only with the shot clock my man. And the NF adopted this rule for shot clock games. The IHSA was just a year late.

NCAAW adopted a similar rule this year (they, of course, have had a shot clock for many years; changed it this year to match (at least substantially) the men's rule, and it's what is shown above). They've come out with at least one clarifying memo on how to enforce and one "you make the call" video to try to get everyone on the same page.
