Throw in violation?

A1 has a throw in on end line and ball hits the bottom padding on back board. Ball falls to floor inbounds and A1 is first to pick up the ball and scores successful basket.

Legal play or throw in violation since A1 first to touch ball in bounds as the thrower?

The Rookie:

If you are saying that the Ball hit the bottom of the Backboard then nothing illegal has happened.

Well, not yet -- but when A1 touches the ball, that's a violation.

It is a violation. A1 cannot be the first to touch a throw-in pass that he himself threw. This is why on the roll the ball inbounds play, we need to make sure that a player different from the original thrower touches the ball before signaling for the clock(s) to start.

NFHS:

4-4-5 . . . A ball which touches the front faces or edges of the backboard is treated the same as touching the floor inbounds.

9-2-6 . . . The thrown ball shall not touch the thrower in the court before it touches or is touched by another player.

The play in the OP is a violation.

Bob:

DOH! A1 being the first to touch the Ball did not register. 99.999% of this Plays are: Was the Ball Out-of-Bounds! Plus I was watching the Indiana at Notre Dame game at the same time.
