2024 NCAAW tournament discussion

https://www.yahoo.com/sports/notre-d...223147145.html

I’ll start this discussion with the above article.
The problem is not enforcing the jewelry rules all season as well as during the first two rounds of the tournament.

Shot Clock

In the ND / OSU game, they had to fix the shot clock after the 1st possession because the clock was showing tenths below 10 seconds, when it was only suppose to show tenths under 5 seconds. Not sure I would have picked that up during the pre game.

There's a sizable subset of officals who won't enforce uniforms and jewelry rules. I see the "they let me play with tape over it" myself.

Doesn't matter to me. I've dealt with headbands, leg sleeves, jewelry, undershirts, etc. I'm fairly matter of fact about it and I know those rules cold and simply enforce them.

There are a few coaches who make a stink about it, but I always say I can't be responsible for what other crews have allowed. And to be honest, I think it's set a positive tone with some coaches cause they see we have attention to detail and know the rules. Also, we said a quiet word pregame rather than make a big stink about it later.

But WTF, this is NCAA Division I and these are supposedly the best of the best - how TF does this happen at that level?

I'm also a "Fashion Police" stickler in my middle school games.

I don't ignore equipment (undershirts, headbands, wristbands, etc.) issues.

Rules that restrict equipment colors benefit officials by allowing them to easily identify players on each team during fast paced action.

Student athletes should take pride in their appearance as they represent their school and community.

I don't want my interscholastic games looking like the a "Clown College" fourth grade recreation league weekday night practice in a local elementary school gymnasium.

I will work with the coach to try to get those problems taken care of.

However, there's one aspect where I often "fear to tread".

Illegal undershirts under a sleeveless jersey on shy adolescent girls can be a problem for some middle school coaches to take care of.

I do the best I can with illegal undershirts on middle school girls.

I can be politely "talked into" allowing illegal undershirts on middle school girls (not boys) early in the season, with a promise that the coach will work to address the issue in future games.

Also, our interpreter and assigner have a middle school philosophy to "let them play".

Our local interpreter has stated that in middle school games we are to ignore uniform (but not equipment) issues (home team not wearing white, teammates wearing different color shorts, illegal numbers, and duplicate numbers).

I had all four of these "exceptions" in my middle school games this past season, finally having duplicate numbers to fill out my Bingo card.

I have no idea what's done at the middle school level. I just know what I do during varsity games.

Are the people managing the NCAAW tournament incompetent or just apathetic?

“Sunday's women's Elite Eight NCAA Tournament game in Portland, Oregon, took a curious twist before tip-off when officials discovered the 3-point lines weren't the same distance on both sides of the court.

Under NCAA rules adopted in the 2021-22 season, the women's 3-point line was set at 22 feet,1¾ inches. However, the spaces from the top of the key to the 3-point line at the Moda Center appeared to be different. When the NCAA was asked to measure about a half hour before top-seeded Texas and No. 3 seed N.C. State were to tip off, they discovered that was indeed the case.“

Four games played on the court already.
That’s eight head coaches, twelve officials, and more than fifty players who didn’t notice!

“The same court has been used in Portland for four Sweet 16 games Friday and Saturday and the Elite Eight game on Sunday. The game between NC State and Texas was the fifth game of the six scheduled for the regional site, and staffers were seen taking measurements as the two teams warmed up.“

“It’s almost unfathomable how the mistake took four games to be noticed if Sunday afternoon was truly the first time the disparity became known. Once the court was measured, it was obvious to anyone watching that the distances at the top of the arc were different. Look at how much closer it is on the left half of the court than it is on the right.“

Our state does not run any middle school games (at least not with the High School Association). There is an Elementary School Association that covers most of the state, but they modify rules all the time to fit what is common. Most of us do not work those games with the same philosophy as what the IHSA does.

Peace

The 3-point line and its measurement discrepancy is adjusted ahead of the Elite 8 round of the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament between the UConn Huskies and the USC Trojans in Portland.
